To produce a beautiful work of art in any medium, the idea must first come from the artist. Whether it is a traditional, representational, recognizable thing or a modern or abstract, indecipherable what-is-it, it must satisfy one's longing for expression in line, form or color - be it through the hands of the creator or the eyes of the beholder. One's interpretation of beauty and taste in art is founded on one's philosophy of life. In this world where "change" is the only constant, art forms have always expressed either the disturbance or unrest of man's mind or the peace and contentment he has found. Alaska is so vast there is room to grow in every direction. Perhaps this is why Alaskan artists tend to do few grotesque and distorted happenings but prefer to create harmonies of sea, sky and mountains mixed in with rugged people. It has been my privilege to know and work with creative Alaskans for years.
